I am Alexis, World Traveler and I would love for you to join me on my many travels to different countries. Together we will learn about the children and families of these lands. We will learn it is ok to be different, that we are all God's Children.

Alexis's mother and I feel it is important to teach Alexis about diversity and cultural awareness. We want Alexis to know that people of different cultures may be different from us but that it is ok to be different. We want her to know that if we understand their culture that the differences are not really that great. From the time Alexis was born we have been talking to her about world events, and racial tolerance. She has never heard a racial slur in her six years of life. The foundations for racial attitudes are laid as infants and toddlers and after the age of nine their racial attitudes tend to stay the same. That is why it is so important that we never let our children hear or see any form of racial intolerance. When you live in rural Indiana it makes it more challenging to teach about diversity and different cultures. We came up with the idea to have her study about a different country each month and we will do fun activities such as eating at restaurants, playing games, visiting museums, dressing , and listening to music depicting the country we are studying. Follow Alexis on her many travels around the world and feel free to join her as she learns about the many different cultures.

Practicing Being A Global Citizen

The next couple of months Alexis will be experiencing what it means to be a Citizen of the World. She will learn what she can do to make a difference in the World. She will be learning about poverty, hunger, and homelessness and what she as one individual can do to help change someones life. We want her to come away with the understanding that we are our brothers or sisters keeper. It is the responsibility of every citizen of the world to help the poor and the hungry.

Alexis is also learning that over 2.5 billion people lack adequate sanitation and nearly 1.2 billion people live without sanitation facilities at all. Citizen in developing countries need education on sanitation and hygiene. They need access to safe water.

There are close to 50 million people in the United States who do not have enough food to put on the table. Close to 17 million of those are children.

There are 925 million undernourished people in the world with 13 million people in the horn of Africa literally starving.

In a country like ours where the majority have the food they need to not be hungry we have the problem of obesity which is killing our children. Children need to be fed healthier meals at school and at home. There are around one billion people in the world that are undernourished compared to 1.5 billion who are overweight. Obesity kills 2.4 million annually, killing more than hunger.

To learn more about healthy eating Alexis read The Bernstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food.

Homeless is becoming more and more prevalent in the United States. There are 671,859 homeless people in the United States on any given night. In the United Sates 1.5 million children are homeless each year.

Alexis knows that each of us need to do what we can to help the least among us. She will be sending personal care kits to at least two homeless shelters. She will help take care of our chickens and share their eggs with our neighbors. Alexis is also going to participate in the Read to Feed program offered through Heifer International. We will cover that in a later post.
